James L. Chandler Family - Newly Found Photos
Linda Yates hit a treasure trove when she located a previously unknown Chandler cousin, the first Chandler relative she has ever met except for her own father. These photos were furnished by the new cousin. Maybe you can help put some of them in context for Linda.

Submitted by Linda Yates
June 27, 2010

This is purportedly a photograph of James L. Chandler, Linda's g-g-grandfather, and his wife.

From Linda: James L Chandler and his wife Oictoria (or maybe Victoria) Hatfield were both from Georgia. They had a son, William David Chandler, born September 9, 1877, Carrolton, Georgia.

This photo is identified as Julia Chandler and possibly William Chandler.

From Linda: William David Chandler, son of James L. and Oictoria/Victoria Hatfield Chandler, was born September 9, 1877, Carrolton, Georgia., and died June 11, 1923, in Barberton Ohio. William David Chandler married Julia Walker, who was born June 13, 1878, in Carrolton, Georgia, and died April 18, 1933, in Barberton Ohio. Their children were Mamie, born 1903 Alabama and died in her 20s in Ohio; James, born 1904 Georgia; Cramer Beuford (Linda's grandfather), born 1907 Alabama; and Nellie, born 1911 Alabama and died at age 16.

At far left is Linda's grandfather, Cramer Beuford Chandler, as a young man. Cramer, much later in life, is shown with his wife, Sophia (nee Opalewski) Chandler, at left.

From Linda: Cramer and Sophia both died in Arizona. Cramer's brother James married Hazel Mess from Akron Ohio, they also died in Arizona. Cramer's sister Nellie died in Georgia.

Mamie Chandler, at left, was the daughter of William David and Julia Chandler. She was born 1903 Alabama and died in her 20s in Ohio. Katherine Kennedy Mastro, shown above in a 1935 photo, is Mamie's daughter.

Hezekiah Amos and Elender Paralee Hollis Chandler
Hurricane Creek, Mississippi

Donna Gorda sent this photo of her great-grandparents, Hezekiah Amos Chandler and Elender Paralee Hollis Chandler, with some of their children. The photo can be dated to approximately 1905 by comparing the relative ages of the children with known birth dates. Back row, from left: Virgie, Pearlie, Albert, and Mary Susan (Sudie, Donna's grandmother). Front row, from left: James Manuel, Varnell T., John A., Hezekiah (father), and Elender (mother) holding Willie.

Family of Hezekiah Amos Chandler (#8) and Elender Paralee Hollis Chandler (#6) - this photo shows all the children.
  1. Virgie
  2. Pearlie
  3. Albert
  4. Mary Susan
  5. Willie
  6. Paralee (mother)
  7. John A.
  8. Hezikiah (father)
  9. Varnell T.
  10. Bryant
  11. James Manuel
  12. Oliver Carlton
This family was in Hurricane Creek, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, in 1910. Oliver Carlton, the youngest, was born in 1910, so this photo probably dates from about 1913.

This photo of the six older children of Hezekiah Amos Chandler and Elender Paralee Hollis Chandler was apparently taken on the same day and in the same location as the one immediately above.

Back row, from left: James Manuel, Albert, and John A.

Front row, from left: Virgie, Pearlie, and Mary Susan.

Welcome William Chandler of Brownwood, Texas

There is a State of Texas historical marker in Brownwood, Texas, dedicated to Welcome William Chandler with the wording below. A street in the town is also named for Welcome William Chandler.

Transcription of the wording on Welcome William Chandler's historical marker:

Welcome William Chandler

Credited with being the first permanent settler and first farmer in Brown County, Welcome William Chandler (1813-1870) arrived in 1856 with his wife Sarah, their children and several slaves. Their log cabin was a gathering place for other area pioneers and was the site of the county's original post office and store. Chandler served as Brown County judge from 1858 to 1860 and as postmaster for 7 years, although his daughter Jane in fact ran the post office. About 1868 Chandler moved north of Brownwood to a site which has remained in the family for over 100 years. (1983)

More information about the historical marker can be found at www.9key.com.

Confederate Veterans Gather in 1903 in Springville, Alabama

New member Jon Paul Chandler sent the photo above and a scan of a four page Colonel John W. Inzer Newsletter, a publication of the Sons of Confederate Veterans of Asheville, Alabama, dated March 1987. The newsletter carried a reprint of a newspaper article about this 1903 gathering of Confederate veterans. The local newspaper, The Springville Item, reported in part:

On Monday August 17, 1903, one of the most unique and interesting reunions was held by the "Old Ex-Confederate Soldiers" in the Baptist Church at this place. * * * * At 11 o'clock some sixty of the old veterans, living in, and around Springville, assembled in that church, singing, praying, and reading of the scriptures was engaged in, after which short talks were made by Rev. J. S. E. Robinson, A. W. Woodall, S. W. Henny, J. B. Robertson, J. H. Vandergrift and B. B. Cornelius, after which another old time song, "How Firm A Foundation", and then Maj. Harris spoke at length on "Religion in the Camp". During his talk men were seen weeping all over the church. He spoke feelingly and eloquently. * * * *

Maj. Harris deserves the thanks of all our people for planning this gathering -- it was an object lesson that neither poets, nor painter, nor authors could describe; it simply beggers description. Springville never has, and never will witness such a scene again.

Although the newspaper writeup of the reunion makes no mention of Masons, Jon Paul describes it as a "gathering of Free Masons and Confederate Soldiers of Springville, Alabama made in 1903." Jon Paul says, "I only identified the first person on the right that is seated. He is my great grandfather William L. Chandler, born Jan 1, 1836, born in Greenville, South Carolina and served in the Lousiana Caldwell Guards in 1861 for three months, then in the 42nd Alabama as an ambulance driver (pulled by team of mules) from 1862 until discharged and pardoned in North Carolina April, 1865."

Included in the article was a list of the veterans present, giving their company and regiment. That list is available from Claudia at . The men are listed randomly, the list is longer than the number of men in the photo, and there is no identification that relates names to the photograph.
